Jade Mountain centers a National Park. It consists of 11 peaks, Jade peak as the highest at 13,000 feet. Because of the towering heights of 280 kms. of Jade Mountain, it was named Roof of Taiwan. The peak can also be reached by cars for the less incapacitated or those who like to enjoy a mountain view without walking. All season of the year except during winter and typhoons, can be a good time to climb. Clothes to keep warm is necessary. Permits should be obtained by registering with Mountain Climbing Clubs so as to avoid unnecessary inconveniences and fines or penalties.

Getting there:

Several sides or faces available for different approaches to the peak. There is also a River Tracing summit trip route is also available for Aqua Mountaineers.


MAIN PEAK WEST FACE APPROACH: Two routes are available depending on the expertise of the climber. One route is from the YNP Tatachia Vistors' Center (2610 meters / 8563 feet) and climbing the class 3 West Face. It is the shortest and most popular route to the summit. The 10.2 km (6.3 mile) route is class 2 for the first 8.5 km (5.3 miles) to the Paiyun Hut (3460 meters / 11352 feet) after which it becomes a 2.6 km class 3 scramble to the top. The last part of the route, about 1 km to the topmost, called the "Wind Tunnel" , is enhanced with steel and net "Gate" structure to prevent people from being blown off the mountain, as experienced previously. Popular descent routes include either retracing the route up or to hike down the East Face. An overnight can be spent at or near the Paiyun Hut and make it up to the summit to view the sunrise the next day.

MAIN PEAK EAST FACE APPROACH: From the Bunun aboriginal village or mountain resort of Tungpu one ascends 23.5 kms or 14.6 miles to the summit via the Patungkuan Trail. The trail passes through the Patungkuan Meadow (3000 meters / 9842 feet), a popular camping area, at 17.5 km.
