If one were to desire to have a true Javanese experience, Yogyakarta or Jogja, as it is more often called, is the place to be in Indonesia. Its historical temples have been well preserved despite all the tragic calamities that Indonesia had been through. It is also the major centre for classical Javanese arts of batik, ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows.

The Malioboro Mall - A more modern mall where you can buy most that you need. It has also a foodcourt and arcade in the building. Along the street where the building is found are stalls and flee markets where you can buy articrafts and souvenirs.
Mirota Batik - If you feel like buying the locally made colorful clothes called batik, this is the store for you. They also sell wall decors. Because it is near Hyatt, expect that it can get crowded with tourists, as they are also famous for quality products.
Night Market- Try the one of Jalan Srewedani where you get to buy fruits and local products. Environment may be a bit messy though with garbage thrown almost anywhere.

Bakso Mas Kribo - Specialized in bakso or meatballs that are drenched with chicken soup and rice. It is located in Jalan Bantul 44.
Deja Vu -serves Western food at inepensive price. Address is at # Jl. Prawirotaman No.28 where you may see other shops for dining too.
Via Via Yogyakarta- serves local and Western Menu. Price is relatively cheap. Also located in Jl. Prawirotaman.
Bu widodo - famous for gudeg- a local dish and almost always present in local menus. If you are not to keen on spicy and can bear it well, try the spicy one. It is located in Jl wijilan no. 5.
