Traveling by train has never been a trouble in Taiwan with the existence of its interconnecting railways. Three major types of trains traverse the islands:

  • Inter-urban Railways

It connects the major cities and urban areas of Taiwan. There are two systems of this service type. The Taiwan Railway Administration or TRA caters to the most of the passenger and freight transfer, its tracks forming three branch lines and a loop in the country. The Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), a standard gauge track adopting Shinkansen technology of Japan, runs an inter-city service between Taipei and Kaohsiung.

  • Urban Metro

Because of the rapid industrial growth and progress of Taiwan, there is a greater need for rapid transit systems also. Aside from the ones mentioned below, several others have been proposed and are under construction.

  • Taipei Rapid Transit System (TRSTS) or Metro Taipei, responsible for the above-ground and subway systems in the city proper of Taipei.

  • Kaohsiung Light Rail - services downtown Kaohsiung

  • Industrial & Tourist Railways

These were tracks formerly used for industrial purposes such as hauling of logs or sugarcane.

  • Alishan Forest Railway - its route is from Chiayi City to the mountain resort of Alishan.
  • Taiping Mountain Forest Railway - runs in Yilan County, offering a good view of the Taiping Mountain Scenic Area.
  • Taiwan Sugar Railways - short distance train service mostly in central and south Taiwan. Its original purpose was in carrying sugar cane and had limited passenger capacity. However, in recent times, it had concentrated on bringing more people than sugar cane.
