Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars are sites in North Central Laos spread with stone jars dating back to a thousand years. The jars lie in clusters with some reaching 5 feet in height. There are hundreds of sites in the Xieng Khouang area. The jars lie in a plain riddled with unexploded bombs. Only Sites 1, 2 and 3 are open for visitors because of this. It could be considered the most dangerous archaeological site. The Plain of Jars is the remnant of a lost culture in which the jars are believed to have been burial urns. The very creators of these jars are unsure.
