Mahamuni Paya

The Maha Muni Pagoda is home to a revered Buddha image, 12 feet and 7 inches in height. A daily ritual is done by monks each 4 a.m. wherein the image's face is washed and the teeth brushed. The original pagoda was burned down and rebuilt in 1784. Although the image was originally bronze, at present, the gold leafing has reached 6 inches thick.
Location: In the southwest of the city, off the Amarapura Road.
