This World Heritage Site is quite a long way off Hanoi, about 3 hours travel by coach although may take longer if weather condition gets worse. The beauty and serenity of the emerald waters and the 3000 islands that dot this sea is well worth the effort. Most local travel and tours agencies in Hanoi offer a good package which can also be arranged from hotels and lodges. Most packages involves an overnight sleep on a on a boat. Best time for visit is Spring as summer can be stormy and winter has its chill.

Sights to see:

  • Sung Sot Cave - one of the huge caves amongst the 3000 island which has ample good collection of stalactites and stalagmites.
  • Floating Villages - upon taking a boat ride, one will see these homesteads.
  • Cat Ba National Park - Great place for trekking and visiting Viet Hai village.
