Gyeongju had become a major tourist spot for locals and foreigns alike mainly because of the Silla heritage that it had inherited. It was once a capital of the Silla kingdom and was filled with artistic structures and crafts. Many have been destroyed during the Japanese occupation, the Mongol attack and several radical groups in the city. For a time the city after the Silla period lost its popularity and became known again only with the advent of convenient transportation and excavation of the many treasured crafts of the Silla Kingdom.
