Gwangju Metropolitan City stands currently as the sixth largest city and is known as the "shrine of Korean Democracy" as it was the venue for various demonstrations during the Japanese occupation and military rule. Its history dates back to 57 BC and was once a major political and economic center for the country.

Sights to See

  • Soswaewon Garden - a private garden with a pond, waterfall, waterwheel, bamboos and a house. It is located near Gwangju Lake in Nam-myon, Damyang-gun
  • Gwanju National Museum has some antiques displayed. Location is at Buk-gu, Gwangju.
  • Gwangju Folk Museum - shows some Korean culture and customs. Located in Buk-gu also. The Kimchi Festival is held here every October with various stalls, exhibition, contests and performances.
  • Gwangju Art Museum - Displays several paintings and pieces of artworks.
  • Gasa Literature Museum - displays some old Korean verses(Gasa) and manuscripts. It is a walking distance from the Gwangju Lake.
  • World Cup Stadium - located at Pungam-Dong, south west of downtown. Can be reached by taking buses # 16, 22, 34, 36, 106 or 583.

Donghae Haemultang, Jinwol Branch - serves Korean cuisine, majority are fresh seafood. Prices may be quite on the high end. Location is at 258-7 Jinwol-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju-si. One can ride bus # 30 or 333 from the Gwangju Train Station then get off at Daeju Apartment Complex in Jinwol-dong and cross the street to the restaurant.


Korea House - A Korean restaurant serving beef dishes with the grilled prime sirloin and steamed and simmered oxtail as their specialty. Address is 646-3 Jungheung-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju-si, a walking distance from Gwangju Train Station towards Gwangju City Hall. By bus, one may ride bus # 7 or # 9 from Gwangju Express Bus Terminal and get off at Sunbokeum Church.


Yehyang - a restaurant set in a picturesque country side close to Gwangju Airport with a playground and trail along the way. Local cuisine is served at a highly expensive cost though and since the place is quite famous, reservation is necessary. Tel. no is 062-374-3333. Address is at 522-5 Seochang-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju-si.
