Sights to See

  • Galle Lighthouse - Built by the British in 1939, this 20 meter lighthouse is still a forbearing structure on the eastern end of the Fortress walls. One can climb to the top by asking the lighthouse keeper permission to do so.


  • The Fort - provides a relaxing view of the sea and the city. By walking through its ramparts, one will encounter several shops selling jewelries and linen, churches, Dutch and Portuguese structures and the aged clock tower.
  • Meeran Jumma Masjid although looking like a church, the top of this structure bears crescents instead of crosses. Its architecture in notable in the Arab Quarters of the Fort. Although the original mosque was built in 1750's, what stands now is a rebuilt of the early 20th century.


  • Dutch Reformed Church - Located next to the New Oriental Hotel is this newly renovated structure which contains several gravestones in its floors and grounds. It has an old pipe organ which cannot boast of its music now but is still is a historical item.


  • Historical Mansion Museum - house a collection of antiques and towards the rear are some jewelry shops.




Shopping Spree


Accommodations

Most tuk-tuk drivers are paid by some accommodations to bring in guests. If you have a reservation somewhere, ask for specific directions of reaching them. Do not let the drivers take you wherever they like.


Five and Four Stars Hotel

Lighthouse Hotel a relatively new place with marvelous architecture, service and location. Although may be a bit expensive, the money spent is well worth it. Address is at Dadella, Galle Sri Lanka.


Two and Three Stars

Lady Hill Hotel Galle - The rooms are not as spacious but to some it can be a cozy place offering a few of the sea and some greeneries. Address is at No 29 Upper Dickson Rd, Galle Sri Lanka.


Backpackers and Budget Lodge

Beach Haven Guesthouse located right at Galle Fort in a large colonial building. It had upstair rooms with balcony and can offer you a view of the nearby roofs and lighthouse, and mosque. Address is at 65 Lighthouse Street, a few minutes walk from the station.


Lighthouse Lodge relatively very inexpensive compared to other guesthouses and lodge but with basic accommodation only, no hot water for showers, and no a/c but there is fan and mosquito net. It is located right inside the Fort with this address: 62B Light House Street, Galle Sri Lanka.


Dining Places

Seagreen Fresh Fruit Juice Bar - an inexpensive cozy eatery that used to sell some juice but due to public request, they started serve dishes too. Their specialty is seafoods. Located at the Fort, facing the ramparts near the Aeolus Bastion.

Aruna's Restaurant - a budget restaurant serving pizzas and curries. It is located along Lighthouse Street, about a hundred meters from the Main Gate.

Pepper restaurant of a five star hotel, the Fortress. They serve European and local cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Prices are a bit on the high end though. Location is at the Koggala Beach, Galle, PO Box 126, Sri Lanka.
