Nativeland of the most important archaelogical sites in SE Asia, Cambodia had been extending a welcome to throngs of tourists as they flock to view remains of kingdoms dating back to the 9th century. However, the invitation does not only limit to its blood stained history and culture but also extends to its wonderful beaches in the South.

  • Best time to visit: December and January are ideal with cooler and drier climate. However, it can be too dry that you won't be able to appreciate the moats and ponds. Nice time, though may be rainy, is during May-October, just avoid the northeast region as traveling is hindered by waterlogged paths. November is time for Bon Om Tuk, the biggest festival in the country.

International Travel

Flights


Phnom Penh has the oldest international airport in Cambodia, the Phnom Penh International Airport formerly Pochentong International Airport. Flights are available directly to and from Thailand, China, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Vietnam. Other international airports are Angkor International Airport in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville International Airport, but the latter has trips only for Siem Reap.

International Liners

There are seven ports in Cambodia with the two major of them found in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.

Railways

Lines run between Cambodia to Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The one of Thailand has been suspended.


Domestic Transport
  • By Air

There are eleven airports, including the three international airports, that cater to the civil domestic flights for Cambodia.

  • Waterways

Aside from the ports and harbors, the inland waterways of Cambodia are considered vital mode of transportations and even communication. Ferries and barges serve to transport passengers and even some commodities.

  • By Land


Railways

Two rail lines traverse the land of Cambodia from the capital of Sihanoukville to the southern area and from Phnom Penh to Sisophon although trains in that route reach only upto Battambang. The cities served by these rails are Poipet, Sisophon, Mong Ruessei,Pursat, Takeo and of course Phnom Pehn and Sihanoukville.

There also exist in the northwest of the country, a sort of bamboo railway known to the locals as nori or lorrie. It travels about upto 40 km/h.


Buses

Several buses serves intercity route especially between Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. You can check www.kucambodia.com as it provides schedules and costs of these buses and even boats. Some of the new bus units belong to Mekong Bus express. Although price may be a bit expensive, but a foreign US$10 can reach far with an additional sandwich, bottle of mineral water and fruit. Locals are charged less.


Rickshaws, Motorcycles, Taxis

Various transportation are available for the travelers around the city. Tuk-tuks or rickshaws and taxis are good way of moving around the city. Motorcycles are vehicles for moving around temples.
