This city of the Kedah State is close to Thailand thus the influence from the neigboring country is greatly seen through out the city. Although it had experienced a progressive modernization, it still has much to say of Malay culture and history.

Sights to See
- Menara Alor Setar - a tower located in the heart of the city standing as an emblem of modernization and rapid growth in the state of Kedah. Being on top of the 168 meters tower, tourists gets a good top view of the city.
- Masjid Zahir (Zahir Mosque) hosting the state's annual Koran reading, this grand mosque is the largest in Malaysia and its opening dates back to 1912.
- Balai Nobat - a building where the Royal Orchestra's sacred instruments are kept safe. The instruments which consist of three drums, a gong and a flute are only played during royal ceremonies such as weddings, funerals and inagurations.
- Balai Besar - Having been into existence for more than a century, this so-called "Great Hall" building is currently the venue for royal and state functions
- Rumah Kelahiran Mahathir - the family home and birthplace of Malaysia Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohammed where one gets a glimpse of the minister's early life.

Kedai Makanan Laut Haadyai a Thai sea food restaurant famed for kerabu roast duck, seafood tomyam, and steamed fish. A good meal will cost less than US$10. The adress is 1915-E, Jalan Stadium, Alor Setar in front of Kedah Police HQ. It is opened daily from 6:30 pm to 2a.m.
Ni and Ni - their specialty is noodles, whether soup or non-soup based. It is located in Jalan Pintu Sepuluh just opposite the main entrance of Star City Hotel.
Restoran Chuan Chim - specialize in Thai food, especially the hot and spicy cuisine and noodles. It is open daily except Thursday from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Location is at 143, Pekan Simpang Kuala.
